Music and sound research - 2nd Poster

(it's just here to appear on the image of  the blog)

To make an animation it is important to think about the sound that will be used. My animation won't have any voices or main dialog, but sounds are always fundamental to make the animation come to life. For this, I will use music and sound effects to do it.

Sound in animation is important to explain to the public what's going on, for example, if the music goes very low and scary, it's because something scary or paranormal is about to happen, if the music is relaxing and calm, it means everything is well.

Before I show the songs and soundtrack that I’ve got, I need to explain in a more complete way how sound works in the animation. We can look at a famous movie called Wall-E, a movie from 2008 directed by Ben Burtt. He explains that one of the 5 senses that humans have is hearing, and most of the time that sense is not well used in movies, this is an issue because humans are incredibly good at interpreting sound and can tell a lot about what is going on around us. When we watch a movie, we only use 2 senses, our vision, and our hearing, so it makes 50% movie in general and 50% all the audio of the movie. (123helpme, n.d.)

I went to look at good quality music and found someone that was perfect. Martin Molin is known for creating his music in a very creative way. He’s in a Sweden band called “Wintergatan” where he makes his work possible, creating a lot of interesting music and even building his own machine that can play by itself called" Wintergatan Marble Machine ". He says that he loves complex systems and constructions, including cogs. (Staugaitis, 2019)

Wintergatan (2021)

He recently made his songs for free use with the help of people who were supporting him. This is a great help for me, and because his songs from him have good quality, I could use them for my animation. The only thing Martin Molin says about this free use is that I need to always credit him when I put his songs on my work.

(the program I used to put everything together was Premier Pro CS6)

Then I went to see sound effects that were free to use, and I found a place where every audio is for free and you can use them. All the audios are found on a website called “Freesound”. It’s probably not the best site to get sound effects from, but it’s good enough for me to use them.

Another note that I want to make is that the cover of that video is also my second poster for the animation. Below will be all the process stages of the cover:

  1. This seems to be really developing - how long is your animation going to be? I've just spent about 15 minutes on Freesound and found some really nice industrial ambience sounds that might add a certain tension to your animation. Sound is really important and I am glad you have decided to go down this route.

  2. One more thing - check out the sound design on David Lynch's Eraserhead, a film released in 1977. There is a clip here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Rb9QwKqsEU
It's a kind of comic horror movie - the sound helps to create an incredible confusion and tension in the movie - Lynch used a lot of self recorded ambient noises.
