Primary research - Questionnaire
This week I did some primary research by planning some questions that would be suitable for my project, so I could know what people would like about animation. In this way, it would be possible to ascertain whether there was any interest in the type of animation I set out to do: anime, where the main character is a robot.
I managed to get 30 answers, having closed the questionnaire to be able to do the data analysis. When I managed to get the 30 answers, I considered that I was already able to draw some conclusions.
I present my questionnaire below:
Based on the analysis of the answers obtained in the questionnaire, which I present below, it was possible to draw some conclusions.
First Question
Trying to find out the ages of the people who answered my questionnaire, most are between 18 and 20 years old. Between the ages of 26 - 30, I only have a 3.3%, but I managed to get 10% of the questionnaires to be answered by people over 30. It's not surprising that most people who watch animation are younger, although people over 30 have also responded that they like animation.
Second Question
The genders are divided in almost half, so the results are going to go equally to both.
Although we may think that men like animation more than women and hence they answered the questionnaire naturally because it is a topic that interests them.
Third Question
The 3rd question started to be very interesting to me. In the question, the person could pick any option they like, could be one or all of them. From this question, I was waiting for a small fight between cartoons and anime. This was to see how many people liked anime (which is the type of animation I will be doing). The final results are what I expected because people from Europe and America most probably prefer cartoons over anime.
My conclusion is that the majority of people choose cartoon or cartoon & anime, and the rest voted in almost all of the options.
Anime being in 2nd place means that I will have some people enjoying my animation and probably it's easier for me to change some people's minds.
Fourth Question
The 4th question wasn't very surprising, 93.3% of people have watched an animation this year, the rest 6.7% watched an animation last year. In the universe of answers that I got, it is important that people like animation and that they see it. The fact that such a large percentage has seen animation this year is a sign that they consume this product. Now if you watch the animation, the greater the probability of watching the anime as well. If they did not have that interest and taste, the likelihood of being spectators of animation or anime would drop radically.
Fifth Question
The 5th question is about the genre of animation. My animation would fit on the Action / Adventure and it could include a bit of comedy because that is the interest that the public in my sample shows (63.3% Comedy, 26.7% Action/adventure). If I can reach both genres, I can have a wider audience (around 90% of 30 people). The results are good considering the anime I intend to develop and I know that I will already have some people interested in seeing it. With these scores, it will be easier for me to transmit my message through my animation.
Sixth Question
The 6th question, the question was "What's your favorite cartoon/Anime". Most answers were that the person didn't know any or didn't have any. But some of the answers interested me.
Some were anime, including Princess Mononoke, One punch man, Brand New Animal, The Seven Deadly Sins, Pokemon, Dragon maid, etc. All of these are very detailed animes that are not easy to do, so the people that like anime are expecting some level of anime techniques or details.
Some other people mentioned cartoons like Steven Universe, Gumball, Adventure Time, and others. These ones help me because all of these examples are Action/adventure types of cartoons.
Seventh Question
The 7th question was to see what people liked as a character. I had the options of Human, Robot, and Animal. The character in my animation is a mix between these 3, so I could balance the parts, for example, make the character act more like an animal because people like that, or make her act more like a robot.
With this, I know for sure that my character needs to act a bit more like a human, needs to have some robot aspects, and include some animal aspects on 20% of the animation.
The last question was to know what was a major thing that people didn't like in animation. This question wasn't mandatory, but people answered anyway. The answers were:
With this I got some useful information on what people prefer on animation, making me think twice whenever I make a decision because this will affect how the viewer will see the animation.

The last question was to know what was a major thing that people didn't like in animation. This question wasn't mandatory, but people answered anyway. The answers were:
- Lame Humor
- Not fluent enough
- When it becomes obvious that the animation was low effort
- When I cannot see the fights clearly
- bad voice actor maybe
- Poor CGI
- ideological indoctrination
- When the techniques are not good on the animation
- A bad story
- humorless
With this I got some useful information on what people prefer on animation, making me think twice whenever I make a decision because this will affect how the viewer will see the animation.
An excellent and in-depth post, with some good analysis of your results. The next step is to decide what kind of secondary research you can do based on this research. For example, some of the comments you received at the end of the post such as 'poor cgi' or poor techniques can be followed by looking for examples of where animated films don't work.
