Creating a Customer Profile

In class, we made an exercise about creating a customer profile of someone. We were put into pares and asked to ask questions to our pare. Here are the questions and answers from my person: Creating a Customer Profile: Maria Age: 18 Gender: Female Marital Status: Single Location: the UK Occupation: Student Annual Income: As you are students this is more difficult to quantify as some of you will have extensive help from parents and some of you may work and have very little spare income. Presentation - Student talk

Image
During this week's session, we were assigned to present one of the research elements that we completed over the last few weeks in the form of a presentation.  We were separated into breakout rooms and our peers gave us feedback.  For my own presentation, I decided to research Tezuka Osamu, the father of manga and Anime. I wanted to go into detail about the way he approached Manga, the inspiration behind them, and how it is contextual to my project. I decided to keep the PowerPoint pages relatively blank, only consisting of pictures in order to explain everything while going over it. I really liked this exercise as it helped me develop my speaking skills and gave me the opportunity to enlighten my peers about my project and the research behind it. One question asks by one of my colleges was about the story behind the animation. I gave a brief explanation about the story behind it, but one of the following questions was "How does the story help to make the character look t...

Anime Types

When doing an anime, it is needed to find what type of anime it will be. Different from cartoons, there are many types of anime and each one serves its purpose. Many   people think anime itself is a genre when it actually isn’t. Anime is a subcategory of animation, this particular animation style originated from Japan, and they represent a big part of the Japanese culture. The Types are: Shonen : Literally meaning "few years", "shonen" usually refers to boys under the age of fifteen, in this case, teens. Thus, shonen anime and manga are aimed at this audience. Many of these anime and manga have a young male hero and are focused on action, adventure and fighting. However, comedies and series with female protagonists are becoming more and more common. Shonen's works also tend to have more than a fair share of fanservice. Some popular examples of anime and manga shonen are Dragon Ball, Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Watamote, and Attack on Titan. Seinen : “Seinen” re...

Hayao Miyazaki

Image
(NHK, n.d) Hayao Miyazaki is a Japanese animator, filmmaker, screenwriter, writer, and manga artist. He is co-founder of Studio Ghibli, a film and animation company, having won international recognition and acclaim for the quality of his various animated feature films, which he normally writes and directs, and is widely regarded as one of the leading names in the industry of Japanese animation. (Studio Ghibli, n.d.) Miyazaki's works are characterized by the recurrence of several themes, such as the relationship of humanity with nature and technology, the integrity of natural and traditional living standards, the importance of art and expertise, and the difficulty of maintaining pacifist ethics in a violent world. His protagonists are often strong girls or young women, with many of her works presenting ambiguous antagonists who have redeeming qualities. His works have already been highly praised and awarded, with him even having received an Honorary Oscar in November 2014 for his co...

The anatomy of...

Image
During this week, we were assigned to create a blog based on the anatomy related to our project. Because my project is around an animation, I had to do something called: A storyboard cheat sheet. This is basically a sheet that helps animators to set up their scenes depending on what they want. Here are the drawings I did to help me with my animation: Full Medium Close Extreme close Upshot Down shot Worm’s eye view Bird’s eye view Over the shoulder View through OL View through Binocular mask 2 Shot Truck in Truck out CCW Rotation Truck in CW Rotation Truck out This training allowed me to make some interesting angles with my character, allowing me to study it and perfect my style with it. Some shots I didn’t draw with the character because they were simple and not needed for my character to be there, this is because they are only for me to understand what shot works for each scenario. Here is the link for the complete sheet of all the angles and shots possible: http://www.floobynooby.com...

Further research & the direction of my project

Starting a project should be based on research work, so that we can understand which way to go, who can inspire us with work already done in the same area, and how we can build knowledge to be able to do something that is rich in content. and meaning. Especially in a theme like Anime, in which there are many different manifestations on this theme. How was my research, so far, informed my project? The research helped me with information about what people think or like about animation, including the style, the genre, the type of characters, all of this depending on the person. Through research, I was able to discover information about Anime that I didn't know yet. In the various surveys, I was able to perceive the information given and choose what was important or significant for my project. Even knowing some aspects of Anime, the research allowed me to deepen this knowledge and get a look that was not biased or wrong. We often have preconceived ideas on certain subjects and we need ...

Class Task: Further Project Development

Image
This week, we were asked to make 5 sketches about our project and then pick one of the drawings to develop one of the ideas. So I first did some sketches of the character. I focused on the hands of the character because I thought that they were too basic. I also did a drawing of the character just for training. After these drawings, I thought of making some training on the character. And for that, I had an idea. The posters that I will make will include my 2D character in a 3D world, but if I make the character more 3D, it could blend in. I wanted to shadow the character's head (where I thought it was the most difficult part to shadow. The drawings were very good for what I was expecting. They tell me information about how 3D the face is. When I complete one of the 3D scenes, I can use these lighting techniques to make the character 3D. After these sketches, I went back to the hands. I wanted to see what was the best or the worst for the character when talking about her hands. I t...

Tezuka Osamu Research

Image
Today I will be talking about the artist Tezuka Osamu. This artist was the original artist that created the famous Astro boy (where I’ve done research too). Tezuka Osamu was born on November 3rd, 1928, in Toyonaka City, Osaka. His whole life, he was exposed to animation and Manga all his life, making him like it.  Having developed an intense understanding of the preciousness of life from his wartime experience, Tezuka Osamu aimed to become a physician and later earned his license, but ultimately chose the profession he loved the most: manga artist and animated film writer. (Osamu, n.d.) His manga and animated films had a tremendous impact on the shaping of the psychology of Japan's postwar youth. His work changed the concept of the Japanese cartoon, transforming it into an irresistible art form and incorporating a variety of new styles in creating the "story cartoon." Changing the face of literature and movies, his work also influenced a range of other genres. (Osamu, n.d...

Manga & Anime

Image
Many people think that Manga and Anime are synonymous words, but it is necessary to analyze to realize that they are different (although there is a relationship between them). Manga appears in Japan. It is a cartoon story that is read backward, as well as the dialogues that should also be read from right to left. It is characterized by having very different plots and strong and dynamic characters, with characteristics that differentiate them from other types of drawings (e.g. large and expressive eyes). (Prime Cursos, s.d.) The sleeves are mostly black and white, although there are also sleeves in color. (Upen, 2018) Manga has a long history related to Japanese art. It became popular around the world after the First World War, mainly with the character Astro Boy (which I have already analyzed in another post). Anime are animations, which also have their origin in Japan, which have characteristics such as contrast, thematic elements (such as science fiction), and diverse colors. (Prime...

History of Manga - Research

Image
Most of us know what Manga is. We can describe it as the comic book version in Japan. For the most part, this is true. With a long history rooted in rich Japanese art, manga is one of the most fascinating phenomena in Japan and around the world. The first-ever know manga was is considered the foundation of Manga is from art pieces from the year 1200 AD. These first "Mangas" represented a group of animals like monkeys and rabbits behaving like normal humans. This was known as the Handscrolls of Frolicking Animals (Chōjū giga). This is considered the foundation for the fact that these artworks shown techniques from the modern manga (manga that we know today). (British Museum, n.d.) (British Museum, n.d.) By the late 1700s, Japanese artists were combining pictures and words in comic illustrated novels that commented on aspects of contemporary society. These novels were published in large numbers mainly for newly rich and literate urban audiences and show that from an early sta...

CardBoard Box Office research

Image
For the construction of 3D posters about my animation, I wanted to use day-by-day materials. The materials I was thinking of using were cardboard and thick paper. Although they are simple materials, I believe I can achieve the effect that I idealized. For this, I will be taking some inspiration from the Cardboard Box Office. I can describe it as a family that does scenes from famous movies or series and make them using cardboard and recycled materials. They also use themselves to make the characters from different movies and make the background with the said materials. (cardboard box office, n.d.) I will be taking a very good inspiration when doing the posters for the animation I'm making. These posters can be compared to the posters that I did for my last animation called "pandemic life". Before I touch on any material, I need to make sure I have a plan on what I will be doing. It's will be 4 posters, and they will include parts of the animation, for example, the bac...

Primary research - Questionnaire

Image
This week I did some primary research by planning some questions that would be suitable for my project, so I could know what people would like about animation. In this way, it would be possible to ascertain whether there was any interest in the type of animation I set out to do: anime, where the main character is a robot. I managed to get 30 answers, having closed the questionnaire to be able to do the data analysis. When I managed to get the 30 answers, I considered that I was already able to draw some conclusions. I present my questionnaire below: Based on the analysis of the answers obtained in the questionnaire, which I present below, it was possible to draw some conclusions. First Question Trying to find out the ages of the people who answered my questionnaire, most are between 18 and 20 years old. Between the ages of 26 - 30, I only have a 3.3%, but I managed to get 10% of the questionnaires to be answered by people over 30. It's not surprising that most people who watch anim...
